Alaska Sea Grant State Fellowship

Name: Alaska Sea Grant State Fellowship

Award Amount: $60,000 stipend for a 12-month fellowship plus funds for travel and training

Information And Eligibility:
The Alaska Sea Grant State Fellowship is a professional fellowship opportunity administered through Alaska Sea Grant at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It is designed to provide graduate students and recent graduates (those within two years of earning a graduate degree) with real-world, professional experience in science, policy, and resource management related to Alaska’s marine, coastal, and watershed environments. Fellows work full-time for 12 months with host agencies, nonprofit organizations, or state and federal offices based in Alaska, gaining hands-on experience in planning and implementing research, policy, and resource management initiatives that support healthy coastal and marine ecosystems. The program’s structured placement process includes interviews, matching with host offices, and a professional development plan that maximizes the fellowship experience. The fellowship begins in late summer (typically August or September) and runs for a full year.

The fellowship is especially beneficial for students who are nearing completion of their graduate degrees or who have recently completed them. While preference is given to Alaska residents and students completing their degrees at Alaska institutions, foreign nationals are also eligible to apply—though host placements may be limited due to visa considerations. Fellows are expected to be based in Alaska throughout the fellowship year and engage fully in their host organization’s work, contributing to projects that influence natural resource science, marine policy development, community engagement, or environmental stewardship.

Over the course of the fellowship year, Alaska Sea Grant provides a competitive stipend—$60,000 for fellowships starting in 2025—paid monthly, with additional funds allocated to cover travel and required trainings associated with the fellowship experience. This financial support, combined with structured mentorship and professional networking opportunities, helps emerging professionals build career-related competencies while contributing meaningfully to marine and coastal resource priorities across Alaska.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate student nearing completion of a relevant degree or have completed a graduate degree within two years of the application deadline.
  • Degree field should be relevant to marine science, environmental policy, coastal or watershed science, or related disciplines.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing.
  • Fellows must be based in Alaska for the duration of the fellowship.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed fellowship application submitted through the Alaska Sea Grant/eSeaGrant portal.
  • Personal and academic curriculum vitae.
  • Personal education and career goal statement (up to 1,000 words).
  • Two letters of recommendation, including at least one from an advisor or faculty familiar with academic work.
  • Copies of academic transcripts (unofficial transcripts accepted).

Deadline: Early February each year (check the Alaska Sea Grant website for specific dates).
