Name: Albert G. Lassuy Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Scholarship
Award Amount: $2,000
Information And Eligibility:
The Albert G. Lassuy Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Scholarship is offered by the Oregon Chapter of the American Fisheries Society (ORAFS) to support undergraduate students who are under-represented in the fisheries and aquatic sciences and are pursuing academic and professional development in this field. This scholarship advances the organization’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by encouraging students from historically marginalized backgrounds — including people of color, women, and other groups under-represented in fisheries science — to pursue careers in aquatic science, fisheries management, conservation, and related disciplines. Recipients are recognized not only with financial support but also with professional acknowledgment at the ORAFS annual meeting and exposure in the organization’s communications.
The scholarship is awarded based on a holistic review of applicants academic achievements, leadership potential, community contributions, and alignment with the objectives of promoting inclusion within the fisheries profession. Successful applicants often demonstrate dedication to contributing to under-represented communities through volunteer activities, service, or academic work that reflects a genuine interest in addressing equity gaps within the natural resources field. Because this award is intended to cultivate future professionals who can contribute to diverse representation and inclusive practices, applicants are encouraged to articulate clear goals for their educational journeys and long-term aspirations in fisheries or aquatic science.
Funds from the scholarship can be used to help offset essential college expenses such as tuition, fees, textbooks, equipment, travel for professional development, or meeting registration costs. The scholarship also provides reduced registration and group lodging opportunities at the ORAFS annual meeting, helping recipients engage with peers, mentors, and industry professionals while expanding their professional networks.
