Information and Eligibility:
The AHA Predoctoral Fellowship supports promising students enrolled in doctoral or equivalent clinical health-professional degree programs (e.g., PhD, DrPH, MD/PhD, DrPH in public health) who are committed to research in cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, brain health—or nutrition and public health topics related to cardiovascular health (for example diet, obesity, metabolic syndrome, community nutrition, food / public health interventions). The program promotes integrated research and clinical training to prepare future investigators in the field of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health.
Eligibility criteria include:

  • Academic Level: Applicant must be a full-time student matriculated in a post-baccalaureate doctoral or equivalent clinical-health-science program in the U.S., with coursework completed and at a stage where full-time research effort is possible.
  • Field/Discipline: While cardiovascular research is the primary mission, eligible applicants include “nutritionists” and public-health scholars addressing diet- and nutrition-related risks to heart, brain and vascular health.
  • Membership: Applicant must be a member of the AHA as a “Professional Member” at the time of proposal submission.
  • Institution: Research must be conducted at a U.S.-based nonprofit institution eligible under the AHA award policy.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed online application via AHA’s ProposalCentral system including: proposal narrative (research plan ~5 pages), biosketch/personal statement, literature cited, and budget justification.
  • Transcripts (official or unofficial) for graduate enrollment, résumé or curriculum vitae, and a mentor-sponsor plan.
  • Three reference letters (uploaded via the system) from individuals able to speak to applicant’s research potential and training environment.
  • Submission must include mentor’s description of training plan and environment, and applicant must confirm ability to devote full‐time effort to research from award activation date.

Selection Criteria:

  • Academic and research promise: prior performance, publications/training experience, quality of mentor and lab.
  • Quality and innovation of proposed research in cardiovascular/brain/vascular health including nutritional/public‐health dimensions.
  • Training environment and sponsor/mentor track record; evidence applicant can devote full‐time research effort.

Additional Details:

  • The fellowship term is typically one or two years. Award activation commonly begins January 1 of the following year after selection.
  • This award covers stipend, insurance allowance and project/travel funds; funds for research execution beyond stipend must come from mentor’s lab or other sources.
  • The application deadline is in early September each year (for example Sept. 7, 2022 was a recent deadline). The review and awards process follows with activation the following January.

Deadline:

  • September
