The American Legion Legacy Scholarship is a significant, needs-based scholarship created to support the children of U.S. military service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. Specifically, this program provides financial assistance to the children of active-duty U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard, and military reservists who were federalized and died on active duty on or after September 11, 2001. These students often receive government educational benefits, but those benefits frequently cover only a portion of the total cost of a college education. The Legacy Scholarship aims to close that financial gap by offering additional funding that can be renewed annually.
This scholarship is designed not only to honor the memory of fallen service members but also to empower their children with opportunities to pursue higher education without the overwhelming burden of educational debt. Funding is derived from The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Trust, and the amount awarded each year is based on the trust’s earnings. Eligible applicants must be high school seniors or high school graduates who plan to enroll in, or who are already enrolled in, an undergraduate program at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education. Students pursuing either full-time or part-time enrollment may apply, provided they meet all eligibility criteria. The scholarship may be used for tuition, fees, books, room and board, and other educational expenses authorized by the institution.
One unique feature of the American Legion Legacy Scholarship is that recipients may reapply each year, making it possible to receive funding throughout an entire undergraduate degree program. Awards are calculated based on financial need, taking into account all federal and state student aid the applicant is eligible to receive. This approach ensures that support goes directly to students who require additional financial assistance to complete their education.
