Information and Eligibility:
The ASA Minority Fellowship Program (MFP), established in 1974, aims to ensure a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to assume leadership roles and conduct research relevant to today’s society. To date, the program has supported over 500 predoctoral sociology graduate students.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Academic Status: Must be enrolled in a program that grants the PhD in sociology and be advanced in their program at the time of application.
  • Citizenship: Applicants must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States, have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence, or be eligible under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

Application Requirements:

  • Complete the online application through the ASA’s application portal.
  • Submit official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
  • Provide three letters of recommendation from academic or professional references.
  • Include a personal statement outlining research interests, career goals, and commitment to diversity in sociology.
  • Submit a writing sample demonstrating scholarly work.

Application Timeline:

  • Application Opens: November 13.
  • Application Deadline: January 30.
  • Notification of Awards: Typically in late spring.
  • Fellowship Start Date: August 1.
