Auxiliary to the AVMA Legacy Endowed Scholarship

Name: Auxiliary to the AVMA Legacy Endowed Scholarship Program

Award Amount: $1,000 per recipient

Information And Eligibility:
The Auxiliary to the AVMA Legacy Endowed Scholarship Program is an established veterinary student scholarship administered by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) in recognition of its long-standing partnership with the Auxiliary to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). This scholarship was created to help offset the rising cost of veterinary medical education while honoring a decades-long tradition of service, advocacy, and support for the veterinary profession.

The Auxiliary to the AVMA is a nonprofit organization composed of family members, veterinarians, associates, and friends of the profession whose mission is to promote the science and art of veterinary medicine through education, communication, and professional support. Shortly after World War II, the Auxiliary launched a student loan fund to assist veterinary families facing hardship due to injury or death resulting from military service. Despite economic challenges at the time, the Auxiliary successfully raised funds to support practitioners and students, laying the groundwork for a legacy of uninterrupted support that continues today.

In 2013, the Auxiliary made a transformative contribution of $2,000,000 to the AVMF to establish the Auxiliary to the AVMA Legacy Endowed Scholarship Program. Annual proceeds from this endowment now fund scholarships for veterinary students across the United States and select internationally accredited institutions. The program is designed to provide long-term, sustainable financial support to veterinary students who demonstrate academic commitment, leadership, and a dedication to service within the profession.

Scholarships are awarded annually to students attending AVMA-accredited colleges of veterinary medicine that maintain an active Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) chapter. In addition to U.S. veterinary schools, eligible international institutions include the Atlantic Veterinary College in Canada; St. George’s University and Ross University in the Caribbean; and the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Royal Veterinary College, and the University of Glasgow in Europe. Applicants must be citizens of the United States and enrolled at a qualifying institution.

The Auxiliary to the AVMA Legacy Endowed Scholarship places strong emphasis on leadership and professional engagement. Applicants are evaluated based on academic performance, leadership roles within university-affiliated or external organizations, and their demonstrated commitment to advancing veterinary medicine. The scholarship recognizes students who not only excel academically, but who also embody a sense of responsibility, gratitude, and service to the communities they will one day serve as veterinarians.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be a second- or third-year veterinary student in good standing.
  • Must be enrolled at an AVMA-accredited veterinary school with an active SAVMA chapter.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  • Must demonstrate leadership through university-affiliated or non-university-affiliated organizations.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed scholarship application submitted through the AVMF application system.
  • Academic and enrollment verification.
  • Documentation of leadership roles and professional involvement.
  • Any additional materials required by AVMF.
