Basic Midwifery Student Scholarships

Name: Basic Midwifery Student Scholarships

Award Amount: Varies

Information And Eligibility:
The A.C.N.M. Foundation, Inc. Basic Midwifery Student Scholarships are designed to support students enrolled in basic midwifery education programs as they prepare for careers as Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) or Certified Midwives (CMs). These scholarships help offset educational expenses while encouraging individuals to pursue and complete midwifery training, ultimately strengthening the midwifery workforce and improving access to high-quality maternity care.

The purpose of the Basic Midwifery Student Scholarships is to increase the number, quality, and diversity of midwives entering the profession. By providing financial support during foundational education, the A.C.N.M. Foundation helps reduce barriers that may otherwise prevent capable and motivated students from completing their programs. This investment supports the long-term sustainability of midwifery and promotes equitable maternal and reproductive health outcomes.

Multiple scholarships are awarded each year through this program, supported by restricted and endowed funds as available. These include scholarships that focus on health equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as memorial and honorary awards established to recognize the legacy of leaders in midwifery. Examples include scholarships supporting midwives of color, anti-racism initiatives, regional equity efforts, and students committed to serving underserved communities.

Applicants are evaluated using a holistic review process. Selection criteria include academic performance, professional excellence, leadership potential, demonstrated commitment to health equity, and financial need. Many successful applicants articulate a clear vision for how midwifery aligns with their values and long-term professional goals, particularly in advancing access to care and improving outcomes for marginalized populations.

To be eligible, applicants must be actively enrolled in an ACME-accredited or pre-accredited basic midwifery education program and have completed at least one academic or clinical term. Students must also be members or student members of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), reflecting a commitment to professional engagement and ethical standards. Scholarship recipients agree to submit an awardee report within one year of receiving funding, helping the Foundation understand the impact of its support.

Students who have previously received a Basic Midwifery Student Scholarship may apply again, provided they have not received the award more than twice. This allows continued support for students progressing through longer or more demanding programs while ensuring broad access to funding opportunities.

The A.C.N.M. Foundation uses Submittable to manage applications, creating a centralized and streamlined submission process. Applicants are encouraged to prepare materials early and ensure all eligibility requirements are met before submitting.
