Carson Scholarships

Name: The Carson Scholars Fund Scholarships

Award Amount: $1000

Information And Eligibility:
The Carson Scholars Fund Scholarships recognize and reward students who excel academically and demonstrate a strong commitment to making a difference in their communities. Established by Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Candy Carson, the program was created to address two national concerns: the lack of academic recognition for young students and the need to encourage humanitarian values at an early age. The scholarship is awarded to students in grades 4 through 11 across the United States who embody both high academic achievement and exemplary service to others.

Each Carson Scholarship is a non-renewable $1,000 award; however, previous recipients may reapply annually to earn “recognized Carson Scholars” status and additional scholarship funds. The program stands out because it targets younger students, encouraging them to set long-term academic goals before they reach college age. Schools also benefit from the program through the installation of a Carson Reading Room—designed to promote literacy and a love of learning—whenever a school demonstrates strong support for the mission of the organization.

To apply, students must first be nominated by their school principal, as only one student per eligible school may compete each year. Once nominated, applicants must submit an application packet that typically includes an essay, documentation of community service, and academic records. The scholarship selection committee evaluates students based on their academic excellence (minimum 3.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale), service-oriented leadership, strong character, and dedication to humanitarian causes. Notably, financial need is not considered, making this award accessible to students from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

Recipients of the Carson Scholars Fund Scholarships join a national community of high-achieving, service-minded students and are celebrated at regional awards banquets across the country. The scholarship not only provides financial support for future college expenses but also honors students in ways that bolster self-esteem, motivate continued excellence, and elevate academic recognition within schools.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a student in grades 4 through 11 in the United States.
  • Must hold a minimum 3.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Must demonstrate outstanding community service and humanitarian qualities.
  • Must be nominated by their school principal (only one nominee per school).
  • Previous winners may reapply annually for additional recognition and scholarship funds.

Application Requirements:

  • Nomination from school principal.
  • Completed scholarship application packet.
  • Essay demonstrating academic goals, character, or service commitment.
  • Documentation of community service involvement.
  • Official academic transcript.

Additional Details:

  • Financial need is not considered for eligibility.
  • Supports early academic recognition and positive role modeling.
  • Winners are honored at regional ceremonies and may receive additional recognition in future years.
