The Charles Schwab Financial Capability Scholarships provide financial awards to high-performing students who excel in the National Financial Literacy Challenge. Sponsored by the Charles Schwab Foundation, this scholarship is designed to encourage financial education and recognize students who demonstrate strong financial knowledge and capability. The Foundation works to promote financial empowerment and literacy among young people through financial education initiatives, learning programs, and tools that help students build real-world financial skills.
The scholarship is tied to the National Financial Literacy Challenge, a national online assessment created by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Financial Education. The Challenge consists of a 35-question exam covering topics such as personal finance, budgeting, spending and saving habits, consumer awareness, financial responsibility, and banking. Students from across the country take the Challenge, and top performers become eligible for this scholarship opportunity.
Financial Capability Scholarships are awarded to students who achieve top scores in the Challenge. The Charles Schwab Foundation awards scholarships to 20 students selected by lottery from the top 10 percent of all exam takers across the country. Additionally, the Foundation awards five scholarships to students who score in the top 10 percent nationally among students attending low-income public schools. Each scholarship selected through the challenge is valued at $1,000 and is intended to help support the winner’s college education or future financial plans.
This scholarship aims to reward students not only for their academic success but also for their understanding of the basic financial concepts that are essential for navigating life beyond high school. The award promotes the importance of financial literacy and personal responsibility, while helping students gain confidence in their ability to set financial goals and plan for future success.
