Distinguished Young Women Scholarship

Name: The Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program

Award Amount: Varies

Information And Eligibility:
The Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program is one of the nation’s largest and longest-running scholarship opportunities for high school young women. Formerly known as America’s Junior Miss, the program has been active since 1958 and has awarded more than $93 million in cash scholarships to date. Each year, participants compete at the local, state, and national levels, with the program awarding more than $2 million annually in scholarships—making it a significant opportunity for college-bound students seeking recognition and financial support.

The Distinguished Young Women program is built on five core values: scholarship, leadership, responsibility, advancement, and service. Participants are evaluated in several categories, including scholastics, interview, talent, fitness, and self-expression. Unlike pageants, this program does not involve any swimsuit or physical beauty judging; instead, it focuses entirely on academic performance, personal achievement, and individual potential. Competitors gain valuable skills such as public speaking, interview readiness, confidence-building, and the ability to perform in front of panels and audiences—preparing them for both college and their future careers.

To be eligible for the Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program, applicants must be legal U.S. citizens and must meet their state’s residency requirements. Participants must also be high school juniors at the time of application and able to commit to the full program schedule. All applicants must read, sign, and return the official Distinguished Young Women Rules and Regulations and submit a Funds Request Form if they win scholarship awards. In addition, proof of enrollment—such as an upcoming class schedule, tuition statement, or other acceptable documentation—must be provided before scholarship funds are released.

One of the program’s most unique benefits is the opportunity for personal development and nationwide networking. Participants not only receive scholarship awards but also gain leadership experience, mentorship opportunities, and friendships with other high-achieving young women from across the country. State and national finalists often receive thousands of dollars in cash scholarships as well as opportunities for college-granted scholarships through partner institutions.
