Dr. Gregory Bossart Memorial One Health Scholarship

Name: Dr. Gregory D. Bossart Memorial One Health Scholarship

Award Amount: $5,000

Information And Eligibility:
The Dr. Gregory D. Bossart Memorial One Health Scholarship was established to honor the extraordinary legacy of Dr. Gregory D. Bossart, VMD, PhD, a globally respected veterinarian, pathologist, and conservationist whose work fundamentally advanced the understanding of the interconnected health of animals, humans, and the environment. Funded by Georgia Aquarium and administered by the One Health Commission, this scholarship supports graduate students whose research embodies the One Health framework and addresses complex health challenges across species and ecosystems.

Dr. Bossart devoted more than three decades to marine mammal health research and authored over 200 scientific publications. His groundbreaking work identified emerging and resurgent diseases in dolphins, manatees, whales, and birds, and he developed innovative diagnostic techniques, including the first immunohistochemical method for diagnosing brevetoxicosis, commonly known as red tide poisoning. His long-running Health and Environmental Risk Assessment (HERA) project demonstrated how environmental stressors affecting marine mammals can also serve as indicators of potential human health risks, making One Health a defining theme of his career.

The scholarship is awarded to a currently enrolled graduate student pursuing a DVM, MD, MPH, MS, or PhD degree who is conducting a student-led research project grounded in the One Health model. Eligible fields include veterinary medicine, wildlife biology, epidemiology, public health, medical sciences, basic sciences, social sciences, or related disciplines that emphasize the interconnection between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment. The proposed or ongoing research project is the central focus of the application and is evaluated for its scientific merit, clarity, feasibility, and authentic integration of One Health principles.

Unlike many scholarships, award funds are paid directly to the student rather than through their university. Funds may be used for research-related expenses or educational costs such as tuition, fieldwork supplies, laboratory analyses, or conference travel. Projects that are conceptualized within a One Health framework from the outset are especially competitive. The application cycle opens each spring, with submissions typically due by the end of July and award announcements made by early November in recognition of One Health Day.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be currently enrolled or accepted into a postgraduate program working toward a DVM, MD, MPH, MS, PhD, or equivalent degree.
  • Must be actively engaged in a research project aligned with the One Health framework.
  • Applicants may be based anywhere in the world.
  • Clinical residents without a research component and postdoctoral fellows are not eligible.

Application Requirements:

  • Submission of a single merged PDF including a project narrative, CV, enrollment verification, and one letter of recommendation.
  • Project narrative of no more than 1,000 words detailing goals, methods, One Health relevance, and budget use.
  • Electronic submission through the official One Health Commission portal.

Deadline: July
