The Durvet Animal Health Future Food Animal Veterinarian Scholarship is a national scholarship program created to support veterinary students who intend to pursue careers in food animal medicine, mixed animal practice, or rural veterinary practice. Established through a partnership between Durvet Animal Health and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, this scholarship reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the future of food animal veterinary medicine in the United States.

Food animal veterinarians play a critical role in maintaining a safe, secure, and sustainable food supply while also serving as key contributors to the economic health of rural communities. Despite their importance, food animal and rural veterinary practices continue to face workforce shortages. This scholarship was created to encourage veterinary students to pursue careers in these essential areas by providing financial assistance during their professional education and recognizing students who are committed to serving agricultural communities.

The scholarship is open to second- and third-year veterinary students enrolled at AVMA Council on Education–accredited colleges of veterinary medicine located in the United States. Applicants must be in good academic standing and demonstrate a clear intention to work in food animal practice after graduation. Students who plan to enter mixed animal practice in rural settings are also eligible and encouraged to apply, as these roles often serve as a vital source of veterinary care in underserved regions.

Selection for the Durvet Animal Health Future Food Animal Veterinarian Scholarship is based on alignment with the program’s mission rather than academic performance alone. Applicants are evaluated on their stated career intentions, commitment to food animal or rural practice, and readiness to contribute meaningfully to animal agriculture and rural communities. Eligibility Requirements:
