Information and Eligibility:
The Ed Dwight Scholarship, offered through the NAACP’s Inspire Initiatives, provides funding to outstanding students pursuing undergraduate degrees. Named in honor of Ed Dwight — the first Black astronaut candidate, trailblazer in the American space program, accomplished author, and sculptor — the scholarship supports students interested in science, engineering, aviation, or aeronautics.

This scholarship is intended to advance equity in educational opportunities, preparing students for long-term success in school, work, and life. All completed applications are reviewed and scored, and applicants will be notified of award decisions via email. Awards are final and cannot be appealed.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Membership: Must be a current member of the NAACP.
  • Age Requirement: Must be under the age of 25 at the time of application.
  • Enrollment: Must be enrolled full-time or accepted to an accredited U.S. college or university.
  • Student Status: Must be a graduating high school senior or an undergraduate student.
  • Academic Performance: Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Field of Interest: Must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in science, engineering, aviation, or aeronautics.
  • Financial Need: Must demonstrate financial need.
  • Residency: Must be a U.S. citizen or resident.
