Name: Embrace Pet Insurance Scholarship
Award Amount: $5,000 per recipient (five scholarships awarded)
Information And Eligibility:
The Embrace Pet Insurance Scholarship is a newly established veterinary student scholarship created through a partnership between Embrace Pet Insurance and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation. This scholarship was designed to support veterinary students who are committed to working in shelter medicine and improving outcomes for homeless, abandoned, and underserved animals. By investing in future veterinarians dedicated to shelter-based care, the program aligns directly with Embrace’s long-standing mission to improve the lives of pets in need.
Each year, five scholarships of $5,000 are awarded to third- or fourth-year veterinary students who plan to pursue careers in shelter medicine following graduation. The award is intended to help offset the financial burden of veterinary education while encouraging graduates to enter a critically important area of the profession that often faces workforce shortages and limited funding. Shelter medicine plays a vital role in animal welfare, public health, population management, and access to veterinary care for vulnerable communities.
This scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate a clear intention to work in shelter environments, including municipal shelters, nonprofit rescue organizations, humane societies, and community-based animal welfare programs. Applicants are evaluated based on their academic standing, professional goals, and demonstrated commitment to shelter medicine through coursework, clinical experiences, volunteer work, internships, or advocacy efforts. The selection process emphasizes both merit and mission alignment, ensuring recipients share Embrace’s dedication to protecting homeless animals and strengthening the human-animal bond.
Eligible applicants must be enrolled in good standing at an AVMA Council on Education–accredited college of veterinary medicine located in the United States. Applicants must also be in their third or fourth year of veterinary school at the time of application. Preference is given to students who have articulated a clear career path toward shelter medicine and who intend to work directly with shelter populations upon graduation.
Scholarship funds are distributed during the fall semester and may be applied toward tuition or other eligible educational expenses, as determined by the administering institution. In addition to financial support, recipients gain recognition from both Embrace Pet Insurance and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, highlighting their commitment to animal welfare and community service. This recognition can serve as a meaningful professional credential as students transition into shelter-based veterinary roles.
The Embrace Pet Insurance Scholarship reflects a growing commitment within the veterinary profession to support careers that prioritize access to care, animal welfare, and population health. By supporting students who choose shelter medicine, this scholarship helps ensure that shelters nationwide continue to benefit from skilled, compassionate, and well-trained veterinary professionals.
