Award Amount: $1,000 per recipient

Information and Eligibility:
The Evelyn Covington Scholarship, administered by the Iowa State Sheriffs’ and Deputies’ Association (ISSDA), provides financial assistance to the children or grandchildren of active ISSDA members who are graduating high school. The award supports further education and honors the legacy of Sergeant Evelyn Covington, a longtime deputy who served the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

Eligibility criteria include:

• Affiliation: Applicant must be a natural or adopted child, grandchild or step-child of a current ISSDA member whose primary residence has been with the member for the past four years.
• Academic Level: Graduating senior from high school preparing to enroll full-time in a post-secondary institution.
• Residency/Enrollment: Applicant must plan to attend a college, university or technical school.

Application Requirements:

• Completed scholarship application form via ISSDA.
• Essay of at least 200 words outlining achievements, extracurricular activities and goals.
• Three letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors.
• Graduation photograph.

Selection Criteria:

• Academic performance, demonstrated leadership and community involvement.
• Strength and clarity of the essay and quality of recommendation letters.

Additional Details:

• Fifteen (15) scholarships awarded annually in the amount of $1,000 each.
• Awarded funds are divided into two payments: $500 in the first semester and $500 in the second semester of the recipient’s first year of college.
