Name: Intro Journals Project Award – Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP)

Award Amount: $100 honorarium plus publication of winning work

Information and Eligibility:
The Intro Journals Project Award run by the Association of Writers & Writing Programs gives students enrolled in AWP member creative writing programs the chance to have their prose or poetry published in prominent literary journals. The project is designed to discover new voices and provide visibility and a first publication opportunity for emerging writers.

Eligibility criteria include:

• Academic Level: Undergraduate or graduate students who are currently enrolled in a program that is a member of AWP.
• Submission Type: Students must be nominated by their program director: one short fiction, one creative nonfiction, and up to three poems per program.
• Originality: Each submitted work must be unpublished at the time of entry.

Application Requirements:

• Student nominated via the program’s submission process and uploaded through the AWP online portal.
• Separate file for each work submitted (Word or PDF) with no identifying author name in the file.
• Résumé or statement of student’s writing credentials and background (if required by the journal).

Selection Criteria:

• Quality of the submitted work: originality, craft, and voice.
• Suitability of work for the participating literary journal’s editorial focus.

Additional Details:

• Selected works are published in one of the participating literary journals (such as Colorado Review, Florida Review, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Mid-American Review, Puerto del Sol, Quarterly West, Reed Magazine, Tampa Review).
• Winners receive a modest honorarium and promotional recognition via AWP’s network.
