Information and Eligibility:
The Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Education, supports applicants of superior academic ability, exceptional promise, and demonstrated financial need who are pursuing graduate degrees in selected fields of the arts, humanities or social sciences. Eligible fields include creative writing, studio arts, music, foreign languages, philosophy, history, linguistics, anthropology, public policy, and similar disciplines.
Eligibility criteria include:

  • Academic Level: Applicants must be entering or enrolled in graduate study leading to a doctoral degree or a terminal master’s (in which the master’s is the highest degree) in the eligible fields.
  • Citizenship/Residency: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents.
  • Graduate Credit Limit: Most applicants must have completed no more than 30 semester hours (or 45 quarter hours) of graduate credit in the eligible field at the time of application.
  • Financial Need: Applicants must submit the FAFSA and related documentation so financial need can be determined under Title IV, Part F of the HEA.

Application Requirements:

  • Complete the official application form, including the required fields and documentation as described in the program guidelines.
  • Academic transcript(s) showing past degrees and current enrollment status.
  • Standardized test scores as needed (e.g., GRE) when applicable.

  • Academic excellence and demonstrated promise in the arts, humanities or social sciences.
