Jim Steere Memorial Veterinary Student Scholarship

Name: Jim Steere Memorial Veterinary Student Scholarship

Award Amount: Up to $3,000 (may be awarded to one recipient or split among multiple recipients)

Information And Eligibility:
The Jim Steere Memorial Veterinary Student Scholarship is offered by the Ride & Tie Association to honor the legacy of Dr. Jim Steere, the first head veterinarian of Ride & Tie. Established in his memory, this scholarship recognizes Dr. Steere’s commitment to animal welfare, endurance sports, and the thoughtful integration of veterinary medicine into equine–human athletic competition.

Ride & Tie is a unique endurance sport that pairs a horse and two human competitors over long-distance trails, with participants alternating between riding and running. The sport places a strong emphasis on animal welfare, conditioning, and veterinary oversight—values that align closely with Dr. Steere’s professional contributions. Through this scholarship, the Ride & Tie Association encourages veterinary students to explore topics relevant to endurance sports, equine health, and the veterinarian’s role in safeguarding animal wellbeing in demanding athletic environments.

The scholarship is open to all currently enrolled veterinary students, including international students. Applicants are invited to submit an original essay on a topic appropriate to Ride & Tie, with the subject matter chosen at the student’s discretion. Essays commonly explore themes such as endurance physiology, conditioning and recovery, veterinary ethics in sport, trail safety, or the evolving role of veterinarians in endurance and working-animal disciplines. Past winning essays are available for review through Ride & Tie resources and serve as examples of the scholarship’s academic and professional scope.

A total of $3,000 is awarded annually. At the discretion of the scholarship committee, the award may be granted to a single outstanding essay or divided among multiple recipients whose submissions demonstrate exceptional insight and relevance. Beyond financial support, the scholarship offers professional recognition within a niche but highly respected equestrian and veterinary community, highlighting recipients as thoughtful contributors to endurance-sport medicine.

Applicants must submit a scholarly essay of no more than 1,000 words, accompanied by a list of references. A cover letter is also required and must include the applicant’s name, contact information, veterinary school, and anticipated graduation year. Submissions are reviewed by the scholarship committee for originality, relevance to Ride & Tie, clarity of writing, and depth of veterinary insight.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a veterinary medicine program.
  • Open to both U.S. and international veterinary students.
  • Must submit an original essay relevant to Ride & Tie.

Application Requirements:

  • Original essay (maximum 1,000 words) with references.
  • Cover letter including name, contact information, school, and graduation year.
  • Submission by email to the designated scholarship contact.
