The John F Kennedy Profile In Courage Scholarship is an essay contest for high school students to consider the concept of political courage by writing an essay on a U.S. official who has chosen to do what is right, rather than what is expedient. The John F Kennedy Profile In Courage Scholarship essay contest is open to United States high school students in grades nine through twelve who are U.S. students under the age of twenty enrolled in a high school correspondence/GED program in any of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, or the U.S. territories; and U.S. citizens attending schools overseas.
The winner receives $10,000 (a $5,000 cash award and $5,000 to grow in a John Hancock Freedom 529 College Savings Plan). The winner is invited to the Profile in Courage Award ceremony to accept his/her award. The ceremony is held in May at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston. A second place winner receives a $1,000 cash award. Up to five finalists each receive a $500 cash award.

Applicants must submit an essay on political courage, explaining the actions of a U.S. official who demonstrated political courage. The essay must be between 700 and 1,000 words.
