Name: Life on a Sustainable Planet Fellowships

Award Amount: Stipend: $62,000 per year. Stipends are prorated for periods of less than 24 months. A research allowance is also available.

Information And Eligibility:
The Smithsonian’s Life on a Sustainable Planet Fellowship program supports independent research in the areas of climate change, environmental justice, and resilience and sustainability science. The program includes three specific fellowship opportunities:

  • Smithsonian Climate Change Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
  • Smithsonian Environmental Justice Fellowship
  • Resilience and Sustainability Science Postdoctoral Fellowship

These fellowships aim to foster global engagement, environmental stewardship, and solutions to today’s most pressing environmental challenges. Fellows will work closely with Smithsonian scientists, using Smithsonian data, facilities, and expertise to conduct research with the potential for rapid results and significant impact. The fellowship is open to those whose research aligns with the program’s scope, with a strong emphasis on in-residence research at the Smithsonian.

Eligibility requirements include a prohibition on current employees or contractors of the Smithsonian from applying, and no fellowships may be awarded to individuals employed by or under contract to the Institution in the previous year without prior approval.

Criteria for Selection: Applications are evaluated based on the proposal’s merit, the applicant’s ability to carry out the proposed research, the likelihood of completing the research within the requested time frame, and the extent to which the Smithsonian’s resources can contribute to the research.
