Name: Louisiana Scholarship Program (LaSTEM)
Award Amount: Up to $6,000 per year
Information And Eligibility:
The Louisiana Scholarship Program for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—commonly known as the LaSTEM Scholarship—is a state-funded financial aid program designed to strengthen Louisiana’s STEM workforce by supporting students who pursue degrees in high-demand STEM fields at public universities within the state. The program recognizes that STEM careers are essential to Louisiana’s long-term economic growth, innovation capacity, and competitiveness, and it aims to reduce financial barriers that prevent capable students from completing rigorous STEM degree programs.
The LaSTEM Scholarship is targeted toward Louisiana residents who demonstrate both academic readiness and financial need. Award funds can be used to help cover tuition, mandatory fees, textbooks, laboratory costs, and other education-related expenses that are often higher for STEM majors due to lab requirements, specialized equipment, and extended course sequences. By providing consistent financial support, the program allows students to focus on demanding coursework without the added pressure of excessive work hours or student loan debt.
Students eligible for LaSTEM must be enrolled full-time in an approved STEM major at a Louisiana public university. Eligible disciplines typically include, but are not limited to, engineering, computer science, information technology, mathematics, physical sciences, biological sciences, and certain applied technology programs. Because STEM programs often require sequential coursework, maintaining continuous enrollment and satisfactory academic progress is essential for continued eligibility.
The LaSTEM Scholarship places an emphasis on persistence and degree completion. Recipients are expected to remain in a STEM major and maintain the minimum GPA requirements throughout the award period. If a student changes to a non-STEM major or fails to meet academic standards, the scholarship may be reduced or discontinued. However, students who remain committed to STEM pathways benefit from renewable funding that can support them throughout multiple academic years, subject to available state funding.
Financial need is determined through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and students are strongly encouraged to submit their FAFSA as early as possible to ensure consideration. Because funding is limited and demand is high, meeting all deadlines and submitting complete documentation is critical.
