Name: Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG)
Award Amount: Up to $15,000
Information And Eligibility:
The Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) program is an internationally recognized grant initiative dedicated to empowering women through education. Established in honor of Margaret Craig McNamara, a strong advocate for women’s education and global development, MMEG supports women from developing and emerging economies who are pursuing higher education with the goal of improving the lives of women, children, and communities in their home countries.
MMEG is not simply a financial aid program—it is a mission-driven grant designed to support women who demonstrate leadership potential, academic excellence, and a clear commitment to social impact. The program recognizes that investing in women’s education has a multiplier effect, strengthening families, communities, and national economies. As a result, MMEG places strong emphasis on applicants who plan to return to their communities or continue working in areas that directly benefit underserved populations.
Eligible applicants must identify as women and be nationals of countries classified as developing or emerging economies. Applicants must be at least 25 years old and enrolled in an accredited institution at the time of application. MMEG supports a wide range of academic paths, including undergraduate completion programs, graduate degrees, and professional certifications, as long as the program aligns with the applicant’s stated goals of community impact and development.
Grants may be used to cover a variety of education-related expenses, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, transportation, and basic living costs. MMEG grants are not loans and do not require repayment, but recipients are expected to remain engaged with the MMEG network and uphold the program’s values of leadership and service.
Selection is competitive and holistic. Review committees consider academic achievement, financial need, leadership experience, clarity of purpose, and the applicant’s long-term vision for contributing to social or economic development. Strong applications clearly articulate how the applicant’s education will translate into meaningful impact, particularly for women and children in disadvantaged communities.
MMEG operates through regional programs, including grants for women studying in the United States and Canada, as well as selected universities in other regions. Each regional program may have slightly different eligibility details and award ranges, but all share the same core mission and selection criteria. Because deadlines and requirements vary by region, applicants are encouraged to review program-specific instructions carefully.
Recipients of MMEG grants join a global network of women leaders, professionals, and advocates. Many alumnae go on to hold influential roles in education, public health, government, nonprofit leadership, and international development, making the MMEG program both a financial resource and a powerful professional community.
