Information And Eligibility: The Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) provides undergraduate students, including those pursuing a teaching credential, with financial aid to attend the University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), or participating California Community Colleges (CCC) offering bachelor’s degree programs. Students with family income and assets up to $217,000 may be eligible.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a California resident attending a UC, CSU, or participating CCC bachelor’s program.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or meet the requirements for non-resident tuition exemption (AB 540 status).
  • Have family income and assets up to $217,000.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress.
  • Not be in default on a student loan.
  • Not be incarcerated.

Selection Criteria:

  • Cost of attendance at the chosen institution.
  • Other available gift aid (federal, state, institutional, or scholarship aid).
  • A self-help student contribution applied to all students.
  • A parent contribution for dependent students with a household income over $100,000.

Application Requirements:

  • Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA) between October 1 and March 2.
  • Establish a WebGrants 4 Students account to monitor state financial aid status.

Additional Information:

  • Scholarship award amounts will vary by student and institution, based on the cost of attendance and available resources.
  • Final award amounts depend on the number of eligible students and the funding allocated by the State Budget.
  • Students may receive the MCS award for up to four years, depending on their education level when first awarded.
