Information and Eligibility:
The Honorably Discharged Veteran Scholarship provides financial assistance to Montana veterans who have been honorably discharged and are pursuing higher education. This scholarship covers up to the full cost of in-state tuition at eligible institutions within the Montana University System; however, it does not cover additional fees. The award amount is determined after applying all other sources of aid, such as federal and state grants and scholarships.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a legal resident of Montana.
  • Must have received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces (discharges under honorable conditions are not accepted).
  • Must have exhausted or have expired federal VA education benefits under Title 38 or Title 10 of the U.S. Code.
  • Must enroll in an eligible institution within the Montana University System.
  • Must maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by the institution.

Application Process:

  • Complete the scholarship application through the Award Montana Portal.
  • Provide official proof of honorable discharge, such as a DD214 form.
  • Submit documentation from the VA indicating that your education benefits have expired or been exhausted.
  • Apply for federal financial aid by completing the FAFSA (optional but recommended).
  • Submit any additional documents required by your chosen institution.

Deadline:
Applications must be submitted no later than the third week of the first semester for which the waiver is being requested. Retroactive awards are not made for previous semesters. It’s advisable to contact the financial aid office at your institution for specific deadlines and additional details.
