Information and Eligibility:
The NARSAD Young Investigator Award supports early-career scientists (post-doctoral researchers, instructors, or assistant professors) conducting basic, translational or clinical investigations into serious psychiatric and brain disorders. The award aims to enable promising investigators to launch independent research careers and generate pilot data for larger grants. Eligible applicants include postdoctoral researchers, assistant professors, or other early-career scientists with a strong track record of academic and research excellence. The award provides financial support for innovative projects, offering recipients the opportunity to advance their research and make meaningful contributions to the field of mental health.
Eligibility criteria include:

  • Academic Status: Applicant must hold a doctoral-level degree (Ph.D., M.D., Psy.D., Pharm.D., etc.) and be actively engaged in research training or early faculty research (instructor or assistant professor or equivalent).
  • Field of Study: Research must address serious brain or behavior disorders—such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, mood or anxiety disorders, eating disorders, child/adolescent psychiatric disorders or other neuropsychiatric conditions.
  • Research Independence: Applicants must not yet have served as a principal investigator (PI) on a major national grant (e.g., NIH R01 equivalent); mentoring and institutional support are required.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed application via the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation’s online portal, including face sheets, abstract, budget, biosketch and institutional assurance.
  • Research proposal describing the hypothesis, design, budget and mentor/sponsor plan.
  • Transcripts or evidence of doctoral degree, résumé or CV outlining research experience and output to date.
  • Mentor’s CV and letter of commitment; letter or statement of sponsor/collaborator if applicable.

Selection Criteria:

  • Scientific merit, innovation and feasibility of the proposed research project.
  • Applicant’s prior academic and research accomplishments indicating promise for independent investigation.

Additional Details:

  • The grant term is typically up to two years; funds may be used for salary support, equipment, supplies, travel or other direct research costs. Indirect costs are generally not permitted.
  • Applications are reviewed by the Foundation’s Scientific Council of leading experts in brain and behavior research. The Foundation emphasizes diversity and inclusion in selecting awardees.
