National Black Nurses Association Scholarship Program

Name: National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) Scholarship Program

Award Amount: Scholarships start at $1,000 and vary by award

Information And Eligibility:
The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) Scholarship Program provides financial support to nursing students at every stage of their education, from practical nursing through doctoral-level study. These scholarships are designed to support academic achievement, leadership development, and professional growth while strengthening diversity and representation within the nursing profession.

NBNA scholarships are awarded annually and formally presented to recipients during the NBNA Annual Institute & Conference. Funding is made possible through a combination of corporate partners, community organizations, NBNA chapters, individual donors, and endowed scholarship funds established in honor of distinguished nursing leaders and advocates. Over time, the program has grown substantially, awarding hundreds of thousands of dollars to nursing students across the country.

  • Supports nursing students from LPN/LVN through doctoral programs
  • Recognizes academic excellence, leadership, and community involvement
  • Scholarships are presented at the NBNA Annual Institute & Conference
  • Funded by corporations, foundations, chapters, and individual donors

Scholarships vary each year and may be sponsored by healthcare organizations, educational institutions, foundations, or individual benefactors. Award names and criteria may differ, but all scholarships share the goal of supporting the academic and professional advancement of Black nurses and those committed to serving underserved communities.

  • Multiple named scholarships offered annually
  • Corporate-sponsored, chapter-sponsored, and endowed scholarships
  • Available for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral nursing students

To be considered, applicants must be members of the National Black Nurses Association and also members of a local NBNA chapter when one exists in their area. Students who do not have access to a local chapter within a reasonable distance may apply as Direct Members. Applicants must be actively enrolled in an accredited nursing program and in good academic standing at the time of application, with at least one full year of coursework remaining.

  • NBNA membership is required
  • Local chapter membership required when available

The application process is comprehensive and competitive. Applicants are required to submit official transcripts, a personal statement outlining academic goals and professional aspirations, letters of recommendation, a résumé or curriculum vitae, and verification of enrollment and expected graduation. Additional supporting materials demonstrating leadership, service, and involvement in student nursing organizations, NBNA activities, and the African American community are strongly encouraged.

The NBNA Scholarship Program is ideal for nursing students who demonstrate academic dedication, leadership potential, and a commitment to advancing health equity. By investing in future nurses across all educational levels, NBNA continues to strengthen the nursing workforce and support the next generation of nurse leaders.
