Name: National DHIA Scholarship for Veterinary Students
Award Amount: $1,500
Information And Eligibility:
The National DHIA Scholarship for Veterinary Students is an annual academic award offered by the National Dairy Herd Information Association (DHIA) to support veterinary students who demonstrate a strong interest in dairy medicine and herd management. Announced for the eleventh consecutive year, this scholarship reflects National DHIA’s ongoing commitment to advancing animal health, data-driven decision-making, and leadership within the dairy industry.
National DHIA is a trade association representing the dairy records industry and plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of dairy records while advancing dairy information systems nationwide. Through this scholarship, National DHIA seeks to encourage future veterinarians who plan to work closely with dairy producers and who recognize the importance of data, technology, and herd information systems in improving animal health, productivity, and sustainability.
The scholarship is awarded to third- and fourth-year veterinary students enrolled in colleges of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education. Applicants are evaluated by the National DHIA Scholarship Committee using a holistic review process that emphasizes demonstrated interest in dairy veterinary medicine, involvement in dairy-related activities, and engagement with DHIA data, dairy software, and herd records. Preference is given to students who show an understanding of how data-driven tools can support dairy management and enhance veterinary services.
Applicants are required to submit a detailed letter of application that addresses several key areas, including their academic background, declared specialty or emphasis area, experience using DHIA data, career plans, and perspectives on current challenges facing dairy veterinary medicine. Students are also asked to discuss potential solutions to those challenges, reinforcing the scholarship’s focus on critical thinking, innovation, and leadership within the profession. Two letters of reference are also required as part of the application.
Scholarship recipients receive $1,500 and are formally recognized at the National DHIA Leadership Sessions and Annual Meeting, which provides recipients with visibility and professional engagement opportunities within the dairy industry. This recognition highlights National DHIA’s belief that veterinarians play a vital role in shaping the future of dairy production through clinical expertise, technology adoption, and collaborative herd management.
By supporting veterinary students at an advanced stage of their education, the National DHIA Scholarship helps foster a new generation of dairy-focused veterinarians who are equipped to use data and information systems to improve animal health outcomes and strengthen the dairy industry.
