Information and Eligibility:
The NHSC Scholarship Program, administered by the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) under the National Health Service Corps, supports students pursuing eligible primary-care health professions education in return for a service commitment at an NHSC-approved site in an underserved (HPSA) community. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, attend an accredited program in the U.S., and pursue an eligible discipline. Eligibility includes full-time enrollment or acceptance in a qualifying primary-care training program such as physician (MD/DO), dentist (DDS/DMD), nurse practitioner, certified nurse-midwife or physician assistant. The scholarship funds up to four school years and requires at least a two-year service commitment (one year of service per scholarship year, up to a four-year maximum).

Application Requirements:

  • Complete online application via the My BHW portal when open.
  • Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or national status.
  • Submit transcripts, tuition/fees schedule, résumé/CV, personal statement reflecting commitment to primary care in underserved areas, and letters of recommendation.
  • Enroll full-time in an eligible program that prepares for primary-care practice.

Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrated academic achievement and readiness for professional health practice.
  • Clear commitment to serve in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) or similar underserved setting following graduation.
  • Quality and completeness of application materials, alignment with NHSC mission of improving access to care.

Additional Details:

  • Service begins no later than six months after graduation and licensure; service obligation is one year for each year of scholarship support, with at least two years required.
  • Scholarship funds cover tuition/fees and living stipend; tuition/fees portion is non-taxable, stipend is taxable.
  • After service is completed, scholars may be eligible for the NHSC Loan Repayment Program.
