The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program provides comprehensive financial support to students pursuing careers in primary care. This highly competitive scholarship covers full tuition, required fees, and eligible educational costs, and also provides a monthly living stipend. In return, recipients commit to serving at least two years in an approved Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), helping address critical gaps in access to healthcare.

The program is open to students enrolled in, or accepted for enrollment into, accredited programs in qualifying primary care fields. The NHSC Scholarship is intended for applicants who demonstrate a strong interest in serving underserved communities and who are dedicated to practicing primary care long-term. Award recipients sign a service contract agreeing to work at an NHSC-approved site following graduation and completion of training.

Eligible disciplines include primary care physicians (MD or DO), nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, primary care physician assistants, and general or pediatric dentists. The number of awards varies each year based on funding levels and national workforce needs.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national.
  • Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited training program in an eligible primary care discipline.
  • Must commit to providing primary care services in a designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).
  • Must agree to a minimum two-year service commitment in an underserved community.
