Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be currently enrolled (or accepted) full-time as a sophomore in a four-year undergraduate program or as a junior in a five-year undergraduate program (or equivalent status as defined by NOAA)
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Have and maintain a declared major in a discipline that supports NOAA’s mission — including but not limited to environmental science, marine or oceanic science, atmospheric science, biology, physics, engineering, mathematics, remote sensing, geography, hydrology, physical or social sciences, computer or information science, or science education

Application Requirements:

  • Completed online application via NOAA’s Hollings Scholarship portal
  • Official or unofficial transcript(s) from all postsecondary institutions attended
  • Two academic references submitted per program guidelines
  • Short written essays or statements outlining interest in NOAA’s mission, career goals, academic background, and commitment to environmental or oceanic science

Selection Criteria:

  • Strong academic record and GPA
  • Clear demonstration of interest in oceanic, atmospheric or environmental sciences, technology, or related fields
  • Potential for contribution to NOAA’s mission and public service goals
  • Quality and clarity of application materials including essays and recommendations

Additional Details:

  • Scholarship provides up to $9,500 per academic year for two years of study
