Information and Eligibility:
The Sir Alexander Fleming Scholars Program at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) is a paid summer research experience designed to engage students in hands-on biomedical research. Participants work full-time in research laboratories under the guidance of OMRF scientists, attend weekly seminars, and develop professional presentation and writing skills. The program provides an opportunity to experience real-world scientific discovery in an encouraging and collaborative environment.

Fleming Scholars gain exposure to laboratory methods, data analysis, and experimental design, while contributing to ongoing research in fields such as immunology, cardiovascular biology, cancer, and genetics. Scholars also participate in enrichment activities including social events, mentorship sessions, and educational tours.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Academic Level: Open to undergraduate and high school graduates who have completed at least their junior year and have a demonstrated interest in biomedical science.
  • Field of Study: Applicants should be pursuing or intending to pursue studies in a biological or related scientific discipline.
  • Citizenship: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled at accredited institutions within the United States.
  • Residency: Preference is given to Oklahoma residents or students attending Oklahoma colleges and universities.
  • Commitment: Participants must be available to work full-time for the duration of the summer session.

  • Completed online Fleming Scholars Program application through the OMRF website.
  • Personal statement describing research interests, educational background, and career goals.
  • Résumé or curriculum vitae (CV).
  • Official or unofficial academic transcript.
  • Two letters of recommendation from teachers, professors, or research supervisors.

Selection Criteria:

  • Academic achievement and demonstrated interest in biomedical or laboratory research.
  • Quality and clarity of the personal statement.
  • Strength of faculty or mentor recommendations.
  • Potential for success in scientific research careers.

Additional Details:

  • Scholars receive a paid stipend and may be provided on-campus housing if they live more than 40 miles from OMRF.
  • Participants have access to seminars, mentorship, and a variety of professional development opportunities.
  • Program alumni have gone on to successful careers in science, medicine, and research.
