Name: RIVMA Veterinary Student Scholarship
Award Amount: $2,000
Information And Eligibility:
The RIVMA Veterinary Student Scholarship is an annual academic award offered by the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association (RIVMA) to support veterinary students with strong academic performance and demonstrated financial need. This scholarship reflects RIVMA’s ongoing commitment to investing in the future of veterinary medicine by assisting students who have roots in Rhode Island and who are preparing to enter the profession.
The scholarship is specifically intended for veterinary students in their junior year of veterinary school, with funds applied toward their senior year. By targeting students at this stage of their education, the award provides meaningful financial support during a critical transition period, when students are completing advanced coursework, clinical training, and preparing for entry into professional practice.
Eligibility is limited to students who are graduates of a Rhode Island high school or who earned an equivalent high school credential in Rhode Island. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college of veterinary medicine and maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Selection for the scholarship is based on a weighted evaluation process that places emphasis on both academic excellence and financial need, with academic performance accounting for 60 percent of the selection criteria and demonstrated financial need accounting for the remaining 40 percent.
Applicants are required to submit comprehensive academic and financial information as part of the application process. This includes documentation of veterinary school enrollment, academic transcripts, honors and awards, professional and volunteer activities, and detailed information regarding tuition, living expenses, and anticipated educational debt at graduation. Through this thorough review process, the RIVMA Scholarship Committee seeks to identify students who not only excel academically but who would significantly benefit from financial assistance.
A personal statement of intent is a key component of the application. In this statement, applicants explain why they are applying for the scholarship and what makes them a strong candidate for the award. Letters of recommendation from veterinary school faculty or clinicians further support the application by providing insight into the applicant’s academic abilities, professionalism, and potential as a future veterinarian.
All application information is treated as confidential and is reviewed solely by the RIVMA Scholarship Committee for the purpose of selecting a recipient. By offering this scholarship, RIVMA aims to support Rhode Island students as they complete their veterinary education and move forward into careers that will serve animal health, public welfare, and the veterinary profession.
