The RubinCam Youth Award is a nationally recognized youth award administered by the National Genealogical Society to encourage, support, and celebrate young people who demonstrate a serious interest in genealogy and family history research. Established to foster early engagement in genealogical study, the award highlights the importance of historical inquiry, documentation, and analytical thinking among youth researchers.
This award is open to students under the age of 18 who are members of the National Genealogical Society and who have completed an original genealogical research project. The project should reflect thoughtful investigation into family history, ancestral lines, historical records, or related topics and demonstrate the student’s ability to research, analyze, and present genealogical information accurately and clearly. Projects may include written family histories, lineage studies, case studies, or other structured genealogical research formats.
The RubinCam Youth Award is designed not only to provide financial recognition but also to validate the academic and personal value of genealogy as a discipline. Through participation, students gain experience with primary source analysis, critical thinking, organization of historical data, and ethical research practices. These skills are transferable to a wide range of academic fields, including history, anthropology, law, archival studies, and the social sciences.
Award recipients receive a cash prize ranging from $250 to $500, depending on the level and quality of the submission. In addition to the monetary award, winners are formally recognized by the National Genealogical Society and may be acknowledged at the NGS annual conference. This recognition provides young researchers with national visibility and encouragement to continue developing their research interests.
The selection committee evaluates submissions based on research depth, accuracy, originality, clarity of presentation, and adherence to accepted genealogical standards.
