Information and Eligibility:
The State Farm National Merit Scholarship is an excellent opportunity for high-achieving high-school seniors who qualify through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsored by the State Farm Companies Foundation, this program awards twenty $2,500 scholarships each year to outstanding African-American students who demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership and personal accomplishment.
These one-time, nonrenewable scholarships are awarded based on results from the PSAT/NMSQT, as well as academic distinction and notable personal achievements. Recipients may use their scholarship funds toward full-time undergraduate study at any accredited college or university in the United States.
Eligibility criteria include:

  • Academic Level: Must be an African-American high-school senior.
  • National Merit Status: Must meet National Merit Scholarship Corporation criteria, including qualifying PSAT/NMSQT scores.
  • Selection Basis: Awards are based on academic excellence, leadership, personal achievements and National Merit evaluations.
  • Enrollment: Must plan to enroll full-time at an accredited U.S. college or university.

Application Requirements:

  • Participation in the National Merit Scholarship competition.
  • Completion of all National Merit forms and required documentation.
  • No separate application is required through State Farm; eligibility is determined through National Merit processes.

Selection Criteria:

  • PSAT/NMSQT performance and National Merit standing.
  • Academic excellence and rigor of coursework.
  • Leadership qualities and personal accomplishments.
  • Overall evaluation by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Additional Details:

  • Twenty scholarships are awarded annually.
  • Scholarship funds may be applied to tuition, books, fees or other approved educational expenses.
  • The award is nonrenewable and offered as a one-time $2,500 payment.
