Name: Swine Externship Grants
Award Amount: Up to $1,000
Information And Eligibility:
The Swine Externship Grants are administered by the AASV Foundation to provide financial support to veterinary students who complete hands-on externship experiences in swine-focused veterinary practices. These grants are intended to help defray the out-of-pocket costs associated with externships, which are a critical component of veterinary education but often come with significant travel, lodging, and living expenses. By reducing these financial barriers, the program encourages more veterinary students to explore and pursue careers in swine health and production medicine.
The grants support externships lasting a minimum of two weeks and may take place in a swine-exclusive practice, a university-based practice, or a mixed animal practice with a substantial swine component. Eligible externships must involve direct exposure to swine medicine and production systems and must include supervision by at least one veterinarian who is a member of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV). The program is structured to ensure that students gain meaningful, practice-based experience while developing professional skills relevant to swine veterinary careers.
Grant funding is available to veterinary students who are members of the AASV. Students who are not yet members may apply for AASV student membership at the same time they submit their grant application. Each eligible student may receive only one externship grant, and the final grant amount is determined based on the documented costs of the externship and approval by the AASV Foundation.
The Swine Externship Grants are awarded on a reimbursement basis following the successful completion of the externship. Students and host practices are responsible for making arrangements related to professional liability and workers’ compensation insurance coverage. After completing the externship, recipients must submit required documentation to confirm participation and expenses before funds are disbursed. By supporting experiential learning opportunities, the AASV Foundation aims to strengthen the pipeline of future veterinarians entering swine medicine and production-focused practice.
