The Academy of American Poets Raiziss/de Palchi Translation Awards

Name: Raiziss/de Palchi Translation Awards – Academy of American Poets

Award Amount: Alternates annually between a $10,000 book-prize for a completed translation and a $25,000 fellowship (including a 5-week residency at the American Academy in Rome) for a translator working on an in-progress translation.

Information and Eligibility:
The Raiziss/de Palchi Translation Awards recognize outstanding translations into English of modern Italian poetry. These awards are made possible through a bequest from Sonia Raiziss Giop to the The New York Community Trust, and administered by the Academy of American Poets.
Eligibility criteria include:

  • Citizenship/Residency: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. residents (including DACA/TPS/Legal Permanent Status) at the time of the application.
  • Language & Work: For the book-prize year: a completed translation into English of modern Italian poetry (in standard Italian) published within the specified time frame. For the fellowship year: a major work-in-progress translating twentieth- or twenty-first-century Italian poetry.
  • Alternate Award Years: In one cycle the book prize is offered; in the following cycle the fellowship is offered.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed application via the Academy of American Poets submission portal (e.g., Submittable for the 2026 fellowship).
  • For fellowship applicants: a proposal describing the work-in-progress, resume/CV, sample translation pages, and proof of permission to translate the original poems or that they are in the public domain.
  • For book-prize applicants: typically the published translation, proof of publication, application form details. (Note: specifics vary by cycle.)

Selection Criteria:

  • Quality and literary merit of the translation.
  • Professional readiness and significance of the work (especially for the fellowship).

Additional Details:

  • The award fund is named in honor of Boris raiziss (poet-translator) and Alfredo de Palchi (poet-translator/editor).
  • Recipients are listed on the Academy’s website; for example, the 2026 fellowship will accept submissions from September 15, 2025 to February 15, 2026.
  • The Academy may reserve the right not to award in a given year if no suitable recipient is found.

Deadline:

  • February (for the book-prize year) or February’s mid-month (for the fellowship year) depending on cycle.
