Information and Eligibility:
The Blakemore Freeman Fellowships support one academic year (two semesters or three quarters) of full-time, intensive study of a modern East or Southeast Asian language at an advanced level abroad. Eligible languages include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Khmer.
Eligibility criteria include:

  • Citizenship/Residency: U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Educational Background: Must hold at least a bachelor’s degree by the start of the grant.
  • Language Proficiency: Must be at or near advanced level in the selected language—minimum the equivalent of two to three years of college-level language study by the start of the fellowship.
  • Career Focus: Applicant must demonstrate a professional, academic, business or other career that involves regular use of the language in question.
  • Full-time Commitment: Must devote the fellowship period exclusively to the language study abroad (no part-time research or employment).

Application Requirements:

  • Completed online application via the Blakemore Foundation portal.
  • Resume or CV, personal essay outlining language goals and career plan, transcript(s) showing past language study, and proof of eligibility for language program.
  • Applicants also need to apply separately to the approved overseas language program listed by the Foundation.

Selection Criteria:

  • Academic excellence and strong prior language background.
  • Clearly defined career objectives that depend on proficiency in the Asian language.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience related to the country/region and indication of long-term language use.

Additional Details:

  • Approved language programs are specified and study must take place abroad (in East or Southeast Asia).
  • Fellowship covers both tuition at the language program and a stipend for living, travel, books and related expenses.
  • Application opens each year on July 1 and the deadline is December 30 (Pacific Time) for study beginning the following academic year.
  • Very competitive—recent funding rate has been under 10% of applicants.
