The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) Scholarship

Name: Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) Scholarship

Award Amount: $5,000-$10,000

Information And Eligibility:
The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) Scholarship is designed to increase access to study-abroad experiences for U.S. undergraduate students with financial need — especially those who are underrepresented in the typical study-abroad population (such as first-generation college students, community-college students, and students of color).

FEA aims to reduce financial barriers and encourage global learning, cultural exchange, and academic enrichment by providing significant financial support for tuition, travel, housing, or other costs associated with approved study-abroad programs. Because program costs and durations vary widely, the scholarship amount awarded depends on the length and type of the abroad program (summer, semester, year, etc.) as well as the student’s financial need.

Because FEA is not tied to a single major or field of study, students across all disciplines — humanities, sciences, engineering, business, arts, etc. — are eligible as long as they meet the general eligibility requirements and plan to study abroad for credit.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or DACA recipient
  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at a U.S. college or university at the time of application
  • The planned study-abroad program must be credit-bearing for your home institution
  • The abroad program must meet minimum duration requirements (varies by cycle; often a semester or more; prorated support for shorter programs)
  • Applicants must demonstrate financial need — FEA gives priority to under-represented and economically disadvantaged students.
  • Students must not have previously studied abroad after high-school graduation (for certain scholarship categories)

Application Requirements:

  • Complete the online FEA scholarship application through the official portal
  • Provide proof of enrollment at your home institution and acceptance into the study-abroad program
  • Provide financial-need documentation (e.g., FAFSA or institutional financial aid information) or equivalent evidence as required by FEA
  • Provide details of the abroad program (provider, duration, cost, credits) to verify eligibility and determine grant amount

Selection Criteria:

  • Financial need and under-representation status (e.g., first-generation, minority, community-college background)
  • Academic standing and enrollment status at home institution
  • Approval and credit-eligibility of the chosen study-abroad program
  • Completeness and timeliness of application materials

Additional Details:

  • FEA supports short-term summer study abroad, semester exchanges, and full academic year programs, with grant amounts scaled to program length.
  • Since its founding, FEA has awarded millions of dollars to hundreds of students to help diversify and expand access to global education.
  • FEA scholarships can often be combined with other grants, loans, or scholarships — but recipients must coordinate with their institution’s financial aid office to ensure eligibility and compliance.

Deadline: September 18
