The Kor Memorial Scholarship

Name: The Kor Memorial Scholarship

Award Amount: $500

Information and Eligibility:
The Kor Memorial Scholarship is a unique academic award offered by the Klingon Language Institute (KLI) designed to recognize and encourage scholarship in the field of language studies. While it pays tribute to the famed Klingon warrior Kor from the Star Trek universe, applicants are not required to be familiar with Klingon or any constructed language—though creative and innovative submissions are strongly welcomed.

Each year, one undergraduate or graduate student who is a full-time enrollee in a program leading to a degree in a language discipline (such as linguistics, foreign languages, applied languages, or language-related study) is awarded $500. The selection committee consists of the KLI Director and a rotating panel of language specialists who assess nominations and final applications.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Full-Time Enrollment: Applicant must be a full-time student at the time of the award and enrolled in a program leading to a degree in some field of language study (linguistics, language education, foreign languages, or even constructed language research).
  • Academic Standing: Applicants should show evidence of academic accomplishment and be in good standing within their department. They must also enjoy the respect and endorsement of their supervising faculty.
  • Nomination Allowed: Typically the scholarship requires nomination by a department chair or academic head—most listings indicate that each department may submit one undergraduate and/or one graduate nomination each year.
  • Country/Institution: While not always explicitly limited to students in any specific locale, applicants must be in degree-granting language programs at accredited institutions. Some sources indicate U.S. institutions are prioritized.

Application Process & Requirements:
Applicants must ensure their nomination is submitted by their department chair or head. Materials typically required include:

  • A nomination letter from the department chair, head, or dean describing the nominee’s accomplishments and future potential.
  • Two additional letters of recommendation from departmental faculty.
  • A résumé or curriculum vitae highlighting academic history, awards, department involvement, and any relevant language study or research.
  • A brief personal statement or essay from the nominee outlining their study focus, language-related interests, and how they intend to contribute to the field.

Additional Details:

  • The award is non-renewable and typically presented at the KLI’s annual conference
  • While the scholarship’s name and sponsor reference Klingon lore, the actual field of study is broad: students of traditional languages, linguistics, applied translation, constructed languages, or interdisciplinary language programs are eligible.

Deadline:

  • Application Due: June 1
  • Award Announcement: Typically made shortly after the review of nominations and during the KLI conference.
