The Melanie Foundation Mental Health Scholarship was established to honor the life and legacy of Melanie Merola O’Donnell, whose career and personal mission were devoted to alleviating suffering caused by mental illness. Created by her family and friends, the foundation seeks to support graduate students who demonstrate compassion, integrity, and a commitment to serving individuals and communities affected by mental health challenges.

This scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding graduate student pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in a mental health–related field within the United States. By investing in future clinicians, researchers, and advocates, the foundation continues Melanie’s legacy of generosity, respect, and service. Recipients are selected based on academic commitment, professional involvement, and a demonstrated dedication to improving mental health outcomes.

Eligible applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program in the mental health field at a U.S.-based institution. Qualifying programs must be accredited by recognized credentialing agencies, including ACGME, APA, CACREP, CSWE, or COAMFTE. Applicants are expected to demonstrate past involvement in extracurricular activities, volunteer work, research, or career-related experiences that reflect a commitment to mental health service.

The application process requires submission of a comprehensive set of materials. Applicants must also submit a thoughtfully written essay describing how their experiences in the mental health field have shaped their personal and professional journey.
