The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (Linguistics Category)

Name: National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) – Linguistics / Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences ‘Linguistics’ Category

Award Amount: Up to $37,000 annual stipend + $16,000 cost-of-education allowance for up to 3 years (over a 5-year fellowship period)

Information and Eligibility:
The NSF GRFP supports outstanding graduate students who pursue full-time, research-based master’s or doctoral degrees in eligible STEM fields or the Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences—this includes the sub-field of Linguistics. The program helps ensure the vitality and strength of the U.S. science and engineering workforce by investing in early-career researchers. Applicants planning doctoral or research-based programs in linguistics—such as phonetics/phonology, syntax, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and anthropological linguistics—may apply under the “Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences” major field of study.
Eligibility criteria include:

  • Citizenship/Residency: Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident.
  • Academic Level: Applicant must be either a senior undergraduate student who will enroll full-time in a research-based graduate program in the fall of the award year, or a graduate student who has completed no more than one academic year of their first graduate program at the time of application.
  • Field of Study: The proposed degree must be a research-based master’s or doctoral program, and linguistics must be listed under the correct major field “Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences” (not a professional or practice-oriented degree).

Application Requirements:

  • Completed online application submitted via NSF’s GRFP Application Module by the deadline, with two major essays: a Personal, Relevant Background & Future Goals statement, and a Graduate Research Plan.
  • Official academic transcript(s) showing current or impending enrollment; résumé or CV; and three reference letters submitted via the NSF reference-letter system.
  • For the research plan: clear description of the proposed linguistics research project, intellectual merit, and broader impacts (including how the work benefits society).

Selection Criteria:

  • Intellectual Merit: Quality, originality and promise of the applicant’s ability to advance knowledge in linguistics.
  • Broader Impacts: Potential of the applicant’s work to benefit society, broaden participation in linguistics, and contribute to the scientific community.
  • Applicant’s demonstrated academic preparation, research experience, personal initiative, and likelihood of successfully completing the proposed program and producing meaningful outcomes.

Additional Details:

  • Fellowships are awarded for up to three years of support, usable within a five-year fellowship period. The stipend and allowance are paid to the institution of enrollment. Awards are portable.
  • Applicants in linguistics should ensure their research plan and degree program align clearly with the “Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences” major field and follow NSF guidelines for eligible degree types (research-based).

Deadline:

  • October
