Name: NYS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Program

Award Amount:

  • Provides a full tuition scholarship equal to the SUNY tuition rate at a SUNY or CUNY college.
  • If attending a private institution in New York, recipients may receive a scholarship equivalent to the SUNY tuition rate.

Overview:

The NYS STEM Incentive Program provides full tuition awards to New York State high school graduates who are in the top 10% of their class and plan to pursue a degree in an approved STEM field at a SUNY or CUNY college. The program is designed to encourage students to enter high-demand STEM professions within New York State and requires recipients to work in a STEM field in the state for at least five years after graduation.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Must be a resident of New York State and have resided in the state for at least 12 continuous months prior to the beginning of the term.
  • Graduate from a New York State high school ranked in the top 10% of the graduating class.
  • Be enrolled full-time in an approved undergraduate STEM program at a SUNY or CUNY college.
  • Declare an eligible STEM major leading to a degree in a high-demand STEM field.
  • Agree to reside in New York State and work in a STEM-related field for at least five years after graduation.
  • Be in compliance with the terms of any NYS award received in previous years.
  • Not be in default on a federal or state student loan.

Application Process:

  • File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Complete the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application.
  • Submit the NYS STEM Incentive Program Application by the deadline.
  • Provide required documentation, including proof of class ranking and enrollment in an eligible STEM degree program.

Approved STEM Fields Include:

  • Biological and Biomedical Sciences
  • Computer and Information Sciences
  • Engineering
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Physical Sciences
  • Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences
  • Other related high-demand STEM fields as approved by NYS

Renewal Requirements:

  • Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Must complete the STEM degree within four years of initial enrollment.
  • Must continue full-time enrollment in an eligible STEM degree program each semester.
  • Must continue to file FAFSA and TAP applications annually.

Post-Graduation Requirements:

  • Recipients must reside and work in a STEM-related field in New York State for at least five years after graduation.
  • If the service commitment is not met, the award will convert into a loan that must be repaid.
  • Failure to maintain eligibility or failure to complete the degree in an eligible field will also result in award conversion to a loan.

Additional Information:

  • The award does not cover room, board, books, or additional college fees beyond tuition.
  • Students enrolled in STEM programs at private New York colleges may receive an award equal to the SUNY tuition rate.
  • The award is limited to first-time students enrolling directly after high school.
  • Students must remain in good academic standing at their institution to continue receiving the scholarship.
