The Recording Academy Grammy Museum Grant Program

Name: GRAMMY Museum Grant Program (Recording Academy Grant Program)

Award Amount:

  • Research Grants: Up to $20,000
  • Preservation Grants: Up to $20,000

Information and Eligibility:
The GRAMMY Museum Grant Program, supported by the Recording Academy, provides competitive funding to support two major areas of work: the preservation of historic recorded sound and scholarly research into the impact of music on human health and behavior. This long-standing national program has awarded millions of dollars to universities, researchers, archives, libraries, private collectors, hospitals, and nonprofit organizations dedicated to preserving music history or advancing music-related scientific knowledge.

Preservation grants fund projects that safeguard endangered recordings, collections, and sound materials through archiving, cataloging, restoration, or digitization. Eligible collections may include rare tapes, private recordings, institutional archives, or materials of significant cultural, historical, or musical importance. Research grants support scientific studies exploring music’s effects on cognition, neurological function, early childhood development, therapy outcomes, medical conditions, rehabilitation, and broader social or psychological influence. Both categories aim to advance understanding, accessibility, and preservation of music and its role in society.

Applicants must submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) outlining the project’s purpose, significance, feasibility, and anticipated outcomes. Selected LOI applicants are invited to complete a full proposal. Grant recipients receive national recognition and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the fields of music preservation, neuroscience, education, therapy, and cultural history.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be based in North America
  • Projects must focus on either recorded-sound preservation or scientific/music-impact research
  • For preservation grants, applicants must have clear ownership or access rights to the recordings or materials
  • For research grants, proposals must demonstrate a sound methodology and clearly defined research plan

Application Requirements:

  • Letter of Inquiry (LOI) submitted through the GRAMMY Museum portal
  • If invited, a full proposal including project narrative, methodology, budget, timeline, and team qualifications
  • Documentation of institutional affiliation when applicable
  • Clear description of project goals, expected impact, and dissemination or preservation plan

Selection Criteria:

  • Importance and relevance of the proposed project to music heritage or music-related scientific understanding
  • Strength, clarity, and feasibility of research design or preservation methodology
  • Qualifications and experience of project personnel
  • Quality of the application, budget justification, and potential community or academic impact

Additional Details:

  • Supports both nonprofit organizations and individuals (when affiliated with qualifying institutions)
  • Has funded major archival projects at national museums, libraries, and universities
  • Research grants frequently support groundbreaking work in neuroscience, therapy, and developmental studies
  • Preservation grants may fund digitization, restoration, equipment, cataloging, or archival infrastructure
