Award Amount:

Information and Eligibility:
The Udall Undergraduate Scholarship honors the legacies of Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on Native American self-governance, health care, and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources. The scholarship program identifies future leaders in environmental, tribal public policy, and health care fields. It is highly competitive, with students participating in their schools’ internal competitions before receiving consideration from the Udall Foundation. As a condition of their award, scholars attend a multiday Scholar Orientation experience.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Academic Standing: Must be a full-time sophomore or junior-level student at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States.
  • Field of Study: Pursuing a career related to the environment, or if a Native American or Alaska Native, a career in tribal public policy or Native American health care.
  • Citizenship: U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent resident.

Application Requirements:

  • Must be nominated by your institution’s Udall faculty representative; direct applications are not accepted.
  • Complete the online application, which includes:
    • Personal and contact information.
    • An 800-word essay discussing a significant public speech, legislative act, book, or public policy statement by Morris or Stewart Udall and its impact on your interests and goals.
    • Three letters of recommendation.
    • Transcripts from all colleges attended.
    • A current résumé detailing leadership, public service, and activities.

Application Timeline:

  • Institutional Nomination Deadline: Varies by institution; check with your Udall faculty representative.
  • Foundation Submission Deadline: Early March; specific dates are announced annually.
  • Notification of Awards: Typically in April.
  • Scholar Orientation: Held in August in Tucson, Arizona.
