Information and Eligibility:
The ASN Foundation’s Undergraduate Diversity Research Fellowship (UDRF) supports U.S. undergraduate students who are from historically under-represented groups in nutrition, dietetics or food science and who are conducting a faculty-mentored research project. The program emphasizes diversity in the nutrition sciences and encourages participation in the society’s annual meeting. Eligible applicants must be undergraduate juniors or sophomores, enrolled in a U.S. institution in a nutrition, dietetics or food science program, and must be ASN members residing in the United States.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Membership/Residency: Must be a U.S. resident and an undergraduate member of ASN.
  • Academic Level: Junior or sophomore standing, enrolled in a nutrition/dietetics or food science undergraduate program in the U.S.
  • Under-represented group: Applicants must be from historically under-represented populations in biomedical research, such as Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, persons with disability, and LGBTQIA+.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed online application via the ASN Foundation Portal.
  • Transcript (official or unofficial) verifying current status and program enrollment.
  • Research proposal or project statement including title, objectives, significance, and faculty mentor approval.
  • Mentor/faculty advisor affirmation: An ASN-member investigator or clinical educator must support the applicant and verify the research plan.
  • Letter of recommendation from faculty member.

Selection Criteria:

  • Scientific merit and feasibility of the proposed research project in nutrition or food science.
  • Clarity, communication, and overall quality of the application materials and research plan.
  • Alignment of the applicant’s background, institution, and project with ASN’s commitment to diversity in nutrition sciences.

Additional Details:

  • The award supports presentation of research at ASN’s annual meeting, covering registration fee, travel reimbursements (up to $500) and membership dues ($125) for awardees.
  • Five UDRF grants are awarded annually. Each recipient receives $1,000 for research funding; in addition, the top three finalists receive cash bonuses of $100-$300.
