Name: Voyager Scholarship (Obama Foundation)
Award Amount: Up to $25,000 per year, plus additional enrichment benefits
Information And Eligibility:
The Voyager Scholarship, also known as the Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service, is a highly competitive leadership and financial aid program administered by the Obama Foundation. The scholarship is designed to support college students who demonstrate a strong commitment to community service, leadership, and careers in public service. Its mission is to help reduce the financial burden of higher education while preparing the next generation of leaders to tackle complex social, civic, and global challenges.
The program goes beyond traditional financial aid by combining tuition support with mentorship, leadership development, and access to a global network of changemakers. Voyager Scholars are selected not only for academic ability, but also for their dedication to service, capacity for leadership, and desire to make a meaningful impact in their communities and chosen fields.
Eligible applicants are rising college juniors attending accredited U.S. colleges or universities. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply, provided they can clearly articulate how their academic path connects to long-term public service goals. Public service is broadly defined and may include careers in government, nonprofit leadership, education, healthcare, environmental advocacy, social justice, journalism, public policy, or mission-driven private sector roles that serve the public good.
A distinctive feature of the Voyager Scholarship is its emphasis on experiential learning and global perspective. Scholars receive funding for a paid summer work-travel experience that allows them to pursue service-related projects, internships, or research opportunities domestically or internationally. This component is designed to help students gain real-world experience, expand cultural understanding, and strengthen leadership skills outside the classroom.
In addition to financial support, Voyager Scholars gain access to exclusive programming, including leadership summits, skill-building workshops, and mentorship opportunities with leaders across sectors. Scholars also become part of a lifelong Obama Foundation community, offering long-term networking, professional support, and collaboration opportunities well beyond graduation.
Applicants must demonstrate a record of community involvement, leadership, and service. This may include volunteering, organizing, advocacy, student leadership, nonprofit work, or other activities that show sustained commitment to improving lives or addressing systemic issues. Financial need is considered as part of the selection process, with priority given to students who would benefit most from tuition assistance.
The Voyager Scholarship is ideal for students who see education as a tool for service and leadership rather than solely personal advancement. The program seeks individuals who are reflective, values-driven, and motivated to create positive change at local, national, or global levels.
