Westie Foundation of America Veterinary Scholarship

Name: Westie Foundation of America Veterinary Scholarship

Award Amount: $5,000 per recipient (two scholarships awarded annually)

Information And Eligibility:
The Westie Foundation of America Veterinary Scholarship is a competitive academic award designed to support advanced veterinary students who demonstrate strong character, community involvement, and a commitment to the health and well-being of purebred dogs. Established by the Westie Foundation of America (WFA), the scholarship reflects the Foundation’s mission to promote education, research, and responsible stewardship related to purebred dogs, with particular emphasis on terriers and West Highland White Terriers.

Each year, the Foundation awards two scholarships of $5,000 each to eligible veterinary students in the later stages of their professional education. By focusing on third- and fourth-year students, the scholarship supports individuals who are actively engaged in clinical training and preparing to transition into professional practice or research-focused careers. The award is intended to help offset educational expenses while recognizing students who embody professionalism, ethical conduct, and service to their communities.

In addition to academic achievement, the Westie Foundation of America places strong emphasis on personal character and engagement beyond the classroom. Applicants are expected to demonstrate good moral character and active participation in community service, reflecting the Foundation’s belief that veterinary professionals play an important role in both animal care and public service. Preference is given to students who show a clear interest in purebred dogs, particularly terriers, and who express interest in ongoing research aimed at improving canine health.

A key component of the scholarship is the applicant’s ability to articulate a thoughtful and well-defined vision for their veterinary career. Through a short essay, applicants describe their professional goals and how they plan to contribute to veterinary medicine, research, or animal welfare. The scholarship also emphasizes communication and outreach, as recipients must agree to share their biography and progress with the Foundation’s membership through written reports that may be published in the Foundation’s newsletter and social media channels.

By accepting the scholarship, recipients grant permission for the Westie Foundation of America to use submitted materials for educational and promotional purposes related to advancing research into the health of purebred dogs. This collaborative relationship underscores the Foundation’s commitment to transparency, advocacy, and continued investment in veterinary research and education.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a third- or fourth-year veterinary student in good standing at a U.S. College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Must demonstrate good moral character and participation in community service.
  • Preference given to students with an interest in purebred dogs, especially terriers.
  • Must be willing to share biographical and progress information with the Westie Foundation of America.

Application Requirements:

  • Current resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Two letters of recommendation from professors with whom the applicant has worked.
  • Short essay of 500 words or less describing veterinary career goals and vision.
  • Submission of all required materials to the WFA Scholarship Chairperson.
