Acorn Scholarship

Name: Acorn Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,000 to $4,000

Information And Eligibility:
The Acorn Scholarship is a community-centered award administered by the Acorn Equality Fund to support students from downstate Illinois who demonstrate academic dedication, meaningful volunteer service, and a strong commitment to LGBTQ+ advocacy and inclusion. The scholarship is designed to uplift students who actively contribute to creating safer, more equitable, and more inclusive communities through leadership, activism, education, or service.

This scholarship is open to high school seniors, undergraduate students, and graduate students who are either currently enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited post-secondary institution. Eligible institutions include two-year colleges, four-year colleges and universities, and approved graduate or professional programs. By supporting students across multiple educational levels, the Acorn Scholarship recognizes that advocacy and leadership occur at many stages of academic and personal development.

Applicants must reside in downstate Illinois, defined as all Illinois counties except Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties. This geographic focus allows the Acorn Equality Fund to direct resources toward students in communities that may have fewer local funding opportunities while still fostering statewide LGBTQ+ progress.

Selection for the Acorn Scholarship is based on a holistic review of academic achievement, community engagement, and demonstrated advocacy. Applicants are encouraged to share how their experiences—whether through campus organizations, volunteer work, community initiatives, or personal advocacy—have contributed to LGBTQ+ visibility, equity, and support. The selection committee values authenticity, leadership, and a clear commitment to positive social impact.

Award amounts range from $1,000 to $4,000 and are determined based on available funding and the strength of each application. Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, required fees, books, housing, or other education-related expenses. In some cases, awards may be renewable, provided recipients continue to meet eligibility requirements and remain engaged in their educational and advocacy efforts.

Beyond financial support, the Acorn Scholarship serves as recognition of a student’s dedication to community service and social justice. Recipients join a network of scholars who share a commitment to advancing equality and supporting LGBTQ+ individuals throughout Illinois. This recognition can enhance academic and professional opportunities while reinforcing the importance of advocacy-driven leadership.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must reside in downstate Illinois, excluding Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties.
  • Must be a high school senior, undergraduate student, or graduate student.
  • Must be enrolled in or planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Must demonstrate involvement in community service, leadership, or LGBTQ+ advocacy.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed Acorn Scholarship application.
  • Personal essay describing academic goals, community involvement, and commitment to LGBTQ+ advocacy.
  • Academic transcripts.
  • Letters of recommendation supporting the applicant’s academic performance and community engagement.
