The AHFC Education Scholarship encourages Alaska families to advance their education and career goals. Awardees can receive up to $2,500 in federal assistance to pursue a range of educational opportunities—from short-term vocational programs and technical training to long-term degree programs at Alaska colleges and universities. The scholarship helps cover tuition, books, and fees directly related to the student’s education, promoting career growth and self-sufficiency for Alaskans receiving housing assistance through AHFC.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Residency: Applicants must be Alaska residents.
  • Housing Status: Must be a recipient of AHFC Public Housing rental assistance, either through an AHFC housing voucher program or as a resident of an AHFC-owned unit.
  • Education Level:
    • Adults may apply if they wish to attend a vocational, trade, or academic school.
    • High school seniors may apply if they plan to attend a vocational, trade, or academic school in the semester after graduation.
  • Eligible Schools: Must be located within the State of Alaska and recognized by one of the following:
    • Alaska Post-Secondary Education Commission
    • Alaska Department of Health
    • Alaska Department of Family and Community Services
    • Alaska Department of Labor (Eligible Training Providers List)

Application Requirements:

  • Two letters of recommendation from teachers, employers, property managers, caseworkers, or friends explaining why they support your application.
  • Written essay describing educational, vocational, or economic goals, and involvement in community or self-sufficiency activities.
  • Academic record:
    • High school seniors must provide a recent report card.
    • Current college or trade school students must provide their most recent transcript.

  • Timely submission of all materials.
  • Completeness and accuracy of the application.
  • Quality of letters of recommendation.
  • Strength of written essay and demonstration of career goals and community involvement.
