Alaska Performance Scholarship

Name: Alaska Performance Scholarship

Award Amount: Up to $4,755 annually, renewable for up to four years

Information And Eligibility:
The Alaska Performance Scholarship (APS) is a merit-based state scholarship designed to reward Alaska high school graduates who demonstrate strong academic achievement and choose to continue their education at an eligible in-state postsecondary institution. Administered by the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education (ACPE), the program encourages college readiness, promotes academic rigor in high school, and helps keep talented students in Alaska for higher education and workforce development.

APS eligibility is based on completion of a rigorous Alaska high school curriculum, cumulative GPA, and qualifying standardized test scores. Students may qualify under different award levels depending on their academic performance, with higher tiers providing larger annual award amounts. The scholarship is available to students enrolling in approved Alaska universities, community colleges, and technical or vocational programs.

Award funds may be used to cover a wide range of education-related expenses, including tuition, mandatory fees, books, supplies, and in some cases housing. APS awards are renewable for up to four years, provided students maintain continuous enrollment, meet credit completion requirements, and remain in good academic standing. The scholarship may be used on a full-time or part-time basis, though award amounts may be adjusted based on enrollment level.

A key requirement of the Alaska Performance Scholarship is timely FAFSA submission. Even though APS is merit-based, completion of the FAFSA is mandatory to confirm eligibility and coordinate state aid. Students who fail to submit the FAFSA by the deadline may lose eligibility, regardless of academic qualifications.

The APS program plays a major role in Alaska’s education strategy by incentivizing rigorous coursework in high school and supporting students who pursue postsecondary education within the state. Students planning to qualify for APS are encouraged to work closely with high school counselors early in their academic careers to ensure curriculum and testing requirements are met.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a legal resident of the state of Alaska.
  • Must graduate from an accredited Alaska high school.
  • Must earn a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.5.
  • Must complete a state-approved rigorous high school curriculum.
  • Must achieve a qualifying score on the ACT, SAT, or WorkKeys assessment.
  • Must enroll in an eligible Alaska postsecondary institution.

Application Requirements:

  • Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Ensure high school transcripts are submitted to ACPE.
  • Ensure qualifying ACT, SAT, or WorkKeys scores are on file.
  • Enroll in an eligible Alaska college, university, or technical program.

Additional Details:

  • Award amounts are tiered based on GPA, curriculum rigor, and test scores.
  • Renewable for up to four years with continued eligibility.
  • Funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, and housing.

Deadline: June 30 (FAFSA submission deadline)
